Let's Go Racin'
It’s February, time for racing season to start. Some of the local dirt tracks already have, and the NASCAR haulers have been spotted all week long heading south. The winter off-season is almost over and racers and race fans are ready!
I spent most of last year bitching about NASCAR, about how I wish it was back like it used to be, about how much I hated the “two heats and a feature” as I call it, or Segment Racing as NASCAR calls it, I sent email after email to NASCAR asking and begging them to do away with the dog and pony show that it has turned into. So much so that I often was faced with the question, of “Why do you still watch it if you hate it so much?” Well the feeling I got right now is why, so let me tell you about this feeling I have inside me.
As a child, I used to rush to the library at school every Monday to pour over the newspapers to find the latest news on NASCAR. See, I was a fan long before the internet, long before emails, and spam, I was a fan when you had to hold the newspaper in your hands to read about the latest racing news.
We sat looking at the speed charts, and seeing where our favorite drivers were timing in; we looked at lap times, comparing them to last year’s times to see if our favorite team had found any speed in the off season. We listened to every radio show we could find to hear any news at all about the racing going on in Daytona.
With all drivers and teams starting a new season, everyone was in the same place points wise, no one had scored the first point in racing, and we were praying our favorite driver would be the one who sat at the top of the charts, once the Speedweeks at Daytona were over. We just knew, our driver was going to be the one! This was going to be the dream season for our driver, whom we felt like we knew personally because we had read everything that had been written about him, we knew what session he turned the fastest laps on, we knew all the lap times by heart. We had the fever…
And now, with last season nothing but a memory, we look forward to starting fresh, to being in the top 5 on the speed charts, and to being at the top when they finish qualifying. If our passion for the sport could be added horsepower, then our driver was going to be setting records!
Now at this time of the season, I have that passion again, I want the racing to take me back, and I want it to be side by side, tight battles that make us sit on the edge of our seats as we listen on the radio.
The dreams we have had all winter are about to come true, we are getting ready to start seeing times and speeds from Daytona… BUT now, I don’t have to leave my chair to find the times, nor do I have to even get up to hear what my favorite driver had to say, I can type a few words and hear the news first hand!
I can scan through the internet and find the news that we used to rush to the library for.
So you see, I still have the passion for the sport, I still look all day long every time I get a chance to check my phone to see who is fastest. No more newspapers for me.
So now you know why I am excited as we near the start of racing season.
NOW LET’S GO RACIN'!!!!!
