Fantasy Picks 2020 ~ Auto Club Speedway
Las Vegas Wrap-up and Results
The Vegas race came with a sigh of relief as Ryan Newman walked out of Halifax Medical Center. Praying for a speedy recovery and a quick return to the track.
A 2020 NASCAR schedule shuffle found the Traveling Circus in Sin City for the second race of the season. The 400-miler proved to no match for rookie John Barnes and veteran Vivian Simons who rode their Joey Logano pick to Victory Lane and the 40-point win. Three additional racers finished in the Top 10 as noted below.
The scattered finish resulted in a major shuffling in the points standings as John Barnes used the 40-point win to rocket to the top of the leaderboard and an early 6-point lead. Frank Buhrman, David Nance and Vivian Simons are locked in a tight draft trying to run him down. Overall eight of the eleven competitors changed positions making Vegas look more like Daytona as shown in the Points Standings
Auto Club 400-Fontana Picks
This week it’s 400 miles on the Fontana CA 2-miler. Formerly, a stinker race, but like a fine wine has improved with aging and is now one of the better races on the circuit. Here are some Fast Facts about the third race of the young 2020 season.
That’s what the facts say, let’s see what our Fantasy Racers think about this week’s race.
I waited for years for this track to start to emulate the racing on its big sister track in Michigan. Now that it has, I still don't like it. However, it's on the schedule, so I have to pick someone to win. To be honest, I don't see anyone I like better than the guy that won at Las Vegas, so Joey it is. Mama rides in the #22 this week.
Looks like Logano may be headed for a memorable year, and Ryan Blaney has been strong two weeks in a row, so I'm betting that Brad K. goes for broke at Auto Club to prove that his team isn't dropping down to #3 in the Penske pecking order. Let's go with #2 to win #1.
After considering all my options and drivers who may or may not have a chance to win at Fontana, I have come up with 3 finalists. However, the rules say I cannot submit 3 winners so will have to narrow it down. Chase Elliot has been doing well, as have Brad Keselowski and Kevin Harvick. I have no faith in the JGR Toyotas due to the situation after the discovery of a bit of addition of an item to enhance aero...so I can't take any of those drivers. That being the case, I think I will just ride with Bad Brad this week in his #2 Ford Mustang.
Well now we got the season on the roll and back to Fontana we go! Not too much to take away from the first two races this year other than a mistake, last week, in the strategy play had some of the lower ranked teams to finish higher than usually does and the Hendrick cars seem to be stronger this year! So maybe we’ll hear the famous Dawsonville siren any time soon or maybe this weekend!
Kyle Larson has been good on these 2-milers but I don't think the way the cars are setup with the large spoilers and drafting going on isn't doing him any favors! So instead I'm going to go with #88 Alex Bowman this week for my winner’s pick!
Surely 18 can do it this week. 18 for 2 Fontana’s in a row.
Going with last week's winner. I suspect I will be picking the 22 a lot this year as Joey's got my favorite crew chief on top of the box.
Always disliked Fontana but now that the track has some age on it the racing just keeps getting better. Wouldn't be surprised by one of the young guns winning but super-fast and sliding around on old asphalt just screams KB in the #18 for the win.
Maybe he can bring it home this weekend instead of wrecking. #9, Chase Elliot.

I want to go with Kyle Busch, because I don't think he appreciates where he currently sits after two races. But I'll go with Harvick.
I’ll stick with the 12 this week. He’s missed four two weeks in a row. Third time has to be a charm!
