Fantasy Picks ~ ISM
Last Week’s Recap and Results
Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube
“Harvicking” was the word at Atlanta and although we didn’t hear it much this week and no one thought he could go back to back, the 4 car came through with another dominating win. It would have been a very big weekend but none of our prognosticators took a chance on him this week.
Vicq’s pick of the Evil Kyle (Busch) was our top pick this week in second, netting 35 points for a big move up the standings. Berra’s pick of the 78 came in next in fourth for another strong run while a bevy hopped on the Bad Brad Bandwagon. The Blue Deuce finished sixth and 31 valuable points just ahead of the 22 in seventh. Tim’s pick of Bubba Wallace Jr. just missed out on a top 20 finish, while the “other Busch” dashed Mitch’s hopes when he stuffed Chase Elliott in the wall for a 34th place finish.
After the winds died down and the dust all settled, here is how our Fantasy Race Standings look after Vegas.
This Week’s Picks
This week the third stop of the traveling road show Western swing takes us to the ISM Raceway. Don’t let the name fool you. One look at the track configuration and Monument Hill in the background you know we’re in Phoenix and that means one thing-Kevin Harvick. Since his first win here in 2006, Harvick has won a total of eight times on the odd shaped 1 miler. Had it not been for Dale Earnhardt Jr. getting the win here in the fall of 2015, Harvick would have 6 in a row. Jimmie Johnson, Ryan Newman, Joey Logano and Kasey Kahne have snuck in a Victory or three along the way-can they break Kevin’s stranglehold? Brad, the Kyles and several others have had strong runs here. Will they finally break into Victory Lane or will it be the young’uns who take the Checkers? Or can Flappy, I mean Happy show them his taillights one more time? Let’s see what our Fantasy Racers say this week.
Let's keep it short and sweet this week. The name has changed. It's still Phoenix. Therefore, it's still Kevin Harvick! He's not afraid of 3 in a row, so why should I be?
Should I pick a Ford? The Fords are hot. Should I pick a Toyota? Hamlin always runs well here, and Erik Jones could pick this for his first win. Yeah, but nearly all of us picked Kez last week, and this RFF feature should be interesting, so I'll go elsewhere… no, not to whoever's driving the 51 this week, but rather to Kyle Larson, who just might be the guy to get that Camaro into victory lane first. Sez here that the 42 will scorch the field in the desert sun.
Fiddle-dee-dee...I was searching Racing Reference for Phoenix and had forgotten that it is now ISM Raceway. Finally connected. Still debating with myself whether Kevin is the one to pick as there have been 3 other winners since he was in Victory Lane there. Can he win 3 consecutive races at 3 different tracks? Heck yeah! But then again, perhaps not. Fords are doing very well this year and there are some great drivers in the Fords. I keep thinking it is time for Ryan Blaney to win one. Also time for Brad Keselowski to win. I think I will go with #4 Kevin Harvick for the win. After all, there will be another race for them to go to VL...

After Atlanta, a lot of people were looking to Las Vegas as an opportunity for the Toyota's to pick up where they left off last season. Kevin Harvick's Ford looked as dominating though, as the Toyotas did last year on mile and a half tracks. Phoenix is a track that's always been one of Harvick's best and he goes there after dominating the last two weeks. At some point this season, he'll stop winning races. It won't be this Sunday though because he's going to make to three in a row.
Even though he has let me down the past two three races, I feel this kid is the real deal; Chase Elliott for the win.
The Fords been on top of the game for a few weeks and the big question this week seems to be will there be 3 in a row for the blue oval guys or maybe JGR and Kyle B. gets a win this week at Phoenix?
The Chevy teams lead by HMS still need more data on the new Camaro and Bowman and Byron need more seat-time before they can contend for the win. The only Chevy team that been able to keep up with the Fords is the #42, remember Daytona don't count. SOOOO there you got it. Kyle Larson is my pick for the weekend!!
Someone I am sure will try for a Happy hat trick, but not me.
Hard to pick against the blue ovals though. I'm gonna take a flyer on Brad K this time.
My pick, every week, will be Bubba Wallace. My reasoning is my hope is that Richard Petty will have a successful year with his team and I'm supporting that hope every way I can.
Gosh, I want to move on to someone other than Joey Logano but he’s making it difficult. He’s the last Ford driver to win here and only one of two active drivers to win here in a Ford, plus he’s the only driver to finish in the Top 10 in each 2018 race so far. I’ll try the 22 again.
That’s this week’s picks for the Ticket Guardian 400 from ISM aka Phoenix.
