Fantasy Picks ~ Fontana
Week’s Recap and Results
Ticket Guardian 500
The first race of the 2019 season with the third and final engine/aero combo. This was the most unrestricted package-770 HP/Brake Ducts. That combo saw Kyle Busch take the win on the track and Kelly, Berra and Vicq take the win in our Fantasy Race. Our group of pickers did well on the 1.0 mile flat track with all finishing in the top 20 and had it not been for a broken sway bar for Brad Keselowski probably all ten would have finished Top 10.
The 40 points earned by the race win kept Kelly on top of the leaderboard again this week, while Berra and Vicq advanced one position. J. L., PattyKay and Vivian were in the Kevin Harvick draft but his 9th place finish didn’t help their cause. Will’s Kurt Busch pick helped him gain a position. Bottom line-Lots of shuffling in our points standings after Week Four at Phoenix.
Auto Club 400
The final stop on the NASCAR Western Swing finds the Cup racers at Fontana. Armed with the 550 HP/Aero duct combo that was used earlier in Las Vegas we will see how it affects racing on the California track.
Even though the entry list is Charter plus two (38), so all who can pass pre-race inspection will race-but only one can win. Who will it be this week?
Last year’s winner was Martin Truex, Jr. This year-new team. New engine aero/combo. Will he get the same results? Previous winners include the usual cast of characters-Kyle Larson, Brad Keselowski, Jimmie Johnson (5), Kyle Busch (3), Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch (in a Ford-first time around!). Other drivers who have shown strength here include Clint Bowyer, Joey Logano, Paul Menard and Denny Hamlin. Ryan Blaney and Chase Elliott have shown glimmers on the California 2.0 mile oval.
38 drivers. Who will the winner be? Here is what our Fantasy Racers think will go down this Sunday.
And we're on to Fontana, where it took the track over a decade to "season." I hope she's still that way next weekend, when Brad Keselowski takes the checkers ahead of everyone else. Really torn this week between Brad, Joey and MTJ, but Brad won my mental coin toss. #2 for the win at Fontana!
Big tech problems here - household Internet down & phone is old & cranky (like owner). Limited research time, but Harvick looks like he's due, so we'll go with the #4 in his home state.
Jimmie Johnson has the best win numbers at Fontana, I believe. However, JJ is on the way down and even though he still shines at times, he is no longer a star there. Kez and Harvick have both won there so either one could win another one, I think. But, my choice for winner for the Auto Club 400 will be Joey Logano #22 as he is due.
We who picked KB, were lucky last week that there only was one lug nut loose on his car! It's going to be interesting to see which team is going to be the first to get a little too much creative this year!
So what about this week then? Normally, I like the Fontana races but for this year with the new set of "packages" I'm not too sure! So far this year IMHO the racing is a bit better but not great, but it's too soon to tell what it’s going to bring us! Maybe we'll know more after this week! So who to win? Well I got a feeling we're going to see mostly green flag racing with very few cautions so that will point towards #19 Martin Truex Jr who normally have the car to beat on the long runs! So there's my pick the #19 gets it done!!
Not THAT Junior, this Junior
Truex is the man
I'm going to take a shot in the dark this time. Got no particular reason but I'm going with Kyle Larson this week.
I think I'll give Martin Truex a try this week.
I'm picking #9, Chase Elliott.

It's on to Fontana. Some people call it Auto Club Speedway, I call it Fontana. There sure are a lot of good options to choose from. Kyle Busch is always a factor when the green flag flies. Martin Truex, Jr. has run well here and of course Kevin Harvick has had success here. While any of those or a few others, including the Penske cars are good choices, I'm looking elsewhere.
The two Chip Ganassi cars have a total of five top 5's this season, with Kurt Busch earning three of them. In the last three races, the 1 car has finished 3rd, 5th and 7th. He's made some bold moves on the track and seems poised to take his new team to victory lane. This Sunday at Fontana, he does it.
My picking has not gotten me anywhere so I let my boy pick this week. Bad move. He is a Kyle Busch fan and picked the 18. I just can’t win!
That’s a wrap for this week’s picks for the Auto Club 400 from Fontana.
